The importance of carpet padding is often overlooked, mainly because people are unsure about the benefits.
What are the benefits?
- Increases Insulation – reduces noise and temperature in the room
- Increases carpet longevity – protects the binding and backing of your carpets
- Allows better air flow – improves suction when you vacuum
- Make carpets feel softer – extra layer underneath your carpet
For residential applications, most warranties from major carpet manufacturers require a minimum density of 6 pounds. This number simply refers to pounds of density per square yard in bonded cushion.
Flooring experts widely consider premium cushion to possess an 8-pound density. So, since density trumps other features, a 7/16-inch-thick, bonded, 8-pound cushion will generally outlast a 9/16-inch-thick, bonded, 4-pound cushion, even though the latter is an entire 1/8 of an inch thicker.
The most important function of carpet padding is how it absorbs the abuse of everyday wear and tear. Carpet padding keeps the backing of your carpets from wearing down against the subfloor, and protects them against the wear of heavy traffic.
We always recommend an 8lb. Padding with all of our installation.
